Anxiety is something that many Americans deal with. For some it is a nuisance and for others it is a serious problem. It can affect your daily life, your happiness and your overall health. One common side effect of anxiety is insomnia. Many people lie awake at night worrying, which leads to more anxiety over lost sleep in the morning. It may not be possible to completely get rid of your anxiety, but here are some ways you might be able to lessen it.
1) Delay Your Worries- Most of the things we worry about aren’t going to happen, and even if they might they probably aren’t going to happen today. When you find yourself worrying too much, remind yourself of that, as well as the fact that worrying hardly ever helps the situation. For example, maybe you’re worried about a promotion you’re trying to get at work. Next week, you are going to find out whether you got it or not. When you find yourself worrying about not getting it, remind yourself that even if it did happen, it won’t be for another week. Worrying for a week straight will only be detrimental to your life and health, and won’t increase your chances of getting the promotion at all. Ignoring your worries may only work temporarily, but then you just remind yourself all over again.
2) Take Action- Worrying in itself doesn’t help anything, but worry that leads to action does. Sometimes when we get too busy worrying about something, we forget to actually do something about the problem. One example that is relevant to a lot of people right now is being stuck in a ton of debt. This can be a huge source of stress, and it piles up for a lot of people because they constantly worry about it but don’t do anything to begin paying it off. This is one instance where taking control of the situation and doing something about it will be much more beneficial than worrying or ignoring your worry.
3) Don’t psych yourself out- When your stress is about a personal goal or challenge, fear and worry can cause you to feel more daunted than necessary. An attainable goal can turn into a way bigger deal than it actually is when fueled by worry, making you feel like it is impossible or that you are inadequate. Remind yourself of reality, and don’t let your anxiety get the better of you.
