While you can’t always eat a completely balanced diet, you can reduce your stress levels simply by choosing stress-fighting foods.

Since everyone is different, some stress-relieving foods might work for you while others may not. Your best bet will be to try them all and then incorporate the ones that work for you into your regular diet.

Here are some foods that can help alleviate your stress:

1.	Green Leafy Vegetables. Leafy greens contain a lot of magnesium. Magnesium is an important mineral that has the power to relax muscles.

2.	Fish Oil. Fish oil contains essential fatty acids that help with serotonin uptake in the brain. Serotonin makes you feel good mentally and enables your brain to better cope with stress. You can get your fish oil from certain kinds of fish, such as salmon, or from supplements.

3.	Milk. There is a reason that milk is sometimes referred to as a “wind down” food. The proteins in milk can help reduce anxiety while the calcium is another mineral that can help with muscle relaxation.

4.	Chocolate. A small piece of dark chocolate each day can actually provide you with many health benefits. Chocolate has a stimulating effect. The caffeine also helps to increase serotonin. It’s okay to indulge in chocolate in small amounts!

5.	Red Wine. Many experts believe that a glass of red wine each day provides health benefits. The only drawback is that it’s easy to overdo it when drinking alcoholic beverages. Wine is packed with beneficial antioxidants and can temporarily lower blood pressure and help you relax.

6.	Oatmeal. Oatmeal and other carbohydrates also help increase serotonin levels in the brain. In fact, your brain needs carbohydrates in order to function normally. This is why it’s essential to include good carbohydrates like oatmeal in your regular diet.

7.	Lean Meats. Lean meats can help you combat stress by providing a good source of protein. Turkey, eggs, chicken and fish are all good choices because they contain necessary amino acids for healthy brain function. Remember not to eat fatty meats because the fat can interfere with proper digestion of the amino acids.

8.	Coffee. Yes, caffeine is a stimulant and there is also a risk of developing an unhealthy habit. However, moderation is the key. Coffee can help stimulate the brain into working with more energy and efficiency, helping you feel more motivated and less stressed.

9.	Nuts. Nuts help you maintain your proper blood sugar. They also contain plenty of the vitamin B complex, which combats fatigue.

10.	Spinach. Spinach is one of the world’s super foods. It contains many vitamins, antioxidants and omega 3’s. This means it would be hard to eat spinach and not feel good!

Vitamins & Supplements

Of course, it’s always best to get your nutrients from the natural source. If this isn’t possible, or if you can’t stomach a certain food, it’s best to look for vitamin supplements so you can still derive some benefits from it.

Vitamin supplements help your body get the nutrients it might be missing. Once you start consuming these necessary nutrients, you’ll be on your way to feeling healthier and stress-free.

Does this picture describe your happy home? The baby’s crying while you hurriedly put the fast food on the table, the dog is throwing up on the floor, the hubby’s got the TV on full-blast, and your teenager just angrily slammed the door on his way out.

Unfortunately, it’s a typical scene for many of us. However, the good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. There are, in fact, things you can do to ease this stress and create a more harmonious environment so that you and your family can look forward to coming home!

Although some degree of stress is inherent as you deal with the varying phases of your family members, if you strive to uphold a core set of values and go with the flow, you can maintain a happy and healthy home.

Here are some specific ways you can reduce the stress at home:

1.	Get organized. Life can quickly become chaotic when you don’t maintain organization. An organized home runs smoothly, while an unorganized home leads to stress and lost time.

•	A good tip is to start small with your organization efforts. Start with one room or even a portion of a room. The idea is to think of it as a series of small projects instead of one overwhelmingly huge one.

2.	Communicate. Your family will certainly benefit from actively working on communication skills. When you fail to communicate effectively, you may not get what you want and can even cause upsetting misunderstandings. Working on communication will allow all family members to feel loved and appreciated and help the household run efficiently.

3.	Eat dinner together. Everyone in your family likely has a busy life of their own. It’s easy to suddenly realize that you have no idea what’s going on with your spouse or child. When you make it a point to eat dinner together every night, you make time to connect with your family. You’ll learn how to work as one even with busy lifestyles.

4.	Have fun together. It’s important to schedule time to have fun together as a family, even if these times can’t be as often as you’d like. Schedule family nights in advance and allow each family member a chance to pick that evening’s activity.

5.	Show unconditional love. Be sure to practice the art of unconditional love with your family. This leads to secure attachments and will ultimately keep everyone in your family happy and stress-free.

•	Children and parents alike need to know that, when they make mistakes, they have a loving family that will back them up and forgive them.

6.	Give support. Go out of your way for your family members. It might not be an ideal Friday night to go to your daughter’s art show, but just think of how they’ll feel when they see that they have your love and support. Actively express your support by really being there for your family – no matter what. Just thinking about how much you love them is not enough!

7.	Family rules. Having a set of family rules will help with organization and allow everyone to know what’s expected of them.

•	Schedule a family meeting to establish the house rules. Make sure everyone has a chance to participate and share his or her concerns. You’ll likely find a compromise that allows everyone to be happy.

A happy and stress free home is one built on love. Don’t be too hard on yourself and others, and you’ll have the basis for creating an excellent home life.

You’ve seen them on television and in the movies. Towel-covered women are relaxing, mud on their face, while a therapist is giving them a massage. It looks like heaven and that’s why a trip to the spa can be stress-relieving; when your treatments are over, you feel like a million dollars.

Think of how you feel after a long, stressful day at work or at home with sick children. Your muscles ache and your head pounds. All you want is a few moments of peace to yourself.

Well, why not take the time and pamper yourself? Make an appointment at a day spa and treat yourself to much-needed time to relax and recoup. When you return home, your family may think someone else has walked through the door.

Mainly women visit day spas, but that doesn’t mean men aren’t allowed. In fact, many day spas are beginning to offer their services to men because they can benefit from similar treatments, too. You could find someone to mind the children, if you have them, and you and your partner go for a day at the spa together.

Why are you less stressed after a trip to the spa? Look at the physiology of stress. The muscles tense up, blood circulation may slow due to restriction of blood vessels, and you may even develop a headache.

When you go to a spa, the staff is dedicated to helping your stress symptoms disappear. A massage by a trained masseuse can loosen your muscles, improve circulation, and energize you. You’ll feel like a new person after your massage and may wonder what took you so long to avail yourself to this service.

The other services offered by day spas are also designed to help you relax. They may use smells and aromas which induce relaxation, as well as sounds which are soothing and quieten a racing mind. Their entire goal is to reduce your stress level and pamper you.

Some spas offer exercise or yoga classes. These may help you learn to deal with stress in a proactive way rather than a reactive one. Meditation, yoga, or martial arts all offer a way to handle daily stress. If these classes aren’t offered, the staff may be able to suggest classes which are offered off-site.

You may also note the addition of a water feature in most spas. Either they will have a water fountain in their facility or there will be the sound of water playing in the background. The sound of water gently cascading down rocks or down a quiet stream can be very relaxing. Since the spa’s goal is to help you relax, they will most likely have one of these features. Why not find and set up a fountain in your home to help you experience the same type of peace and relaxation the fountain affords?

Everything about a day spa is meant to help you relax and de-stress. From the colors of the rooms, the lights, and furnishings to the sights, sounds, and smells, the goal is to produce a sense of calm in their clients. If you’ve been tense lately, consider these reasons why a trip to the spa can be stress-relieving and then go make an appointment. You deserve it!

You already know that to-do lists help you get focused and organized throughout the day. When you have your to-do list in hand, you’re freeing your mind from all the disorganized thoughts and, instead, getting them down on paper.

However, this technique can go awry if your to-do list isn’t organized as well as it should be. You might lose your motivation and drive and, at the end of the day, you may notice that most of the things from your list are not crossed off.

Follow these tips to create an effective to-do list:

1.	Clarify Priorities. It may help you to develop some sort of ranking system for your to-do list. Certainly every item on the list can’t be equally important. You can even use a number system and rank them from 1 to 5. Items ranked 1 might have a lower priority, while the 5s are tasks you should attend to first.

•	You should also clarify your priorities in the sense that you need to leave yourself detailed instructions. Figure out the: who, what, where, when and why of items that may be complicated. This way, when it comes time to tackle the task, you won’t skip over them simply because they seem too complex to complete.

2.	Pare Down the List. You need to complete tasks or part of tasks one step at a time. If you have 15 minutes to spare, find something on the list that you can complete in that time period. It’s common to tell yourself that 15 minutes is not enough time to do something, but all those 15-minute chunks add up to something huge. At the end of the day you’ll be surprised how much you’ve accomplished in small increments.

3.	Include Flex Time. If your to-do list is too rigid, it simply won’t be effective. You absolutely need to include some flexibility and breathing room in your day. Try not to jam pack your day with unreasonable goals, otherwise, you’ll be at risk of disappointment.

4.	Add in Something Fun. Your to-do list is no doubt full of things you may not be looking forward. That’s why integrating fun activities and tasks should also be a priority! When you add in a fun item it doesn’t feel like work. It may even feel like a break. When you return to the less desirable items, you’ll be more motivated to actually get them done.

5.	Don’t List Too Much. It’s vital not to overwhelm yourself. While some days might be action packed in order to reach certain deadlines, you need to avoid this level of stress on a regular basis. If there’s too much on your plate, or you have to work too fast, you can’t possibly enjoy yourself and you’ll only end up frustrated and overwhelmed.

6.	Keep It Organized. Your list needs to be organized in a way that makes you feel comfortable. There are many options nowadays, especially with digital devices. However, the old-fashioned pen and paper method may be what works best for you. You can also opt for using the internet or even your cell phone or mobile device to keep your list organized.

The blues might find you when you least expect it. It’s a normal part of life to feel down from time to time. But there’s no reason for you to continue feeling that way. You have the power within you to beat those blues! All you really need is the drive to get rid of them. The rest is all just a matter of how.

Consider trying the following ways:

1.	Avoid wallowing in your problems. If there’s a specific thing that’s causing you to feel down, avoid dwelling on this issue. Take action to resolve the challenge. If this is too difficult at the present time, then concentrate on something else. Shift your mind over to something that makes you happy.

2.	Keep busy with things you enjoy. If you have free time, why not fill it up with things you like? Go with the tried and true activities that you enjoy doing. Chances are that you’ll have a smile back on your face in no time.

3.	Seek out the company of others. You may get the blues because you feel lonely. There’s probably somebody out there that you can spend some time with, even if it’s not one of your close friends. Come up with an activity that you both enjoy doing or just sit and chat.

4.	Pursue a new hobby. Are you feeling blue because you’re bored? Start a new hobby that you’ve always wanted to try. You might even embark on a new lifetime of enjoyment through this new activity.

5.	Take a class. Pick a subject that you have interest in and sign up. If you get yourself jazzed up about a new class, you’ll likely leave your blues behind in the process.

6.	Meet new people. You can find new people to chat with everywhere. You can even do it without leaving your home by finding likeminded people online. Meeting a new friend that you connect well with will certainly improve your mood.

7.	Start new adventures. Try something new with your friends. If you prefer to be alone, you can always go on a solo adventure. Let your mind go wild with fun ideas. Your blues will dissipate as you begin planning an exciting new journey.

8.	Activate your muscles. You can beat the blues just by becoming more active. Even taking a walk in the fresh air can improve your mood. Your blues mindset might tell you that you don’t feel like it or you’re too tired, but chances are that once you get moving, you’ll be glad that you went out of your way to get some exercise.

9.	Get in touch with your spiritual side. Even if you’re not a religious person, you can contemplate the answers to life’s big questions. When you focus on the big picture, sometimes your own challenges don’t feel as large anymore.

Try these strategies the next time the blues bring you down. Just one of these tips may be just the thing to help you turn that frown upside down!

Although children are not presented with the stresses of adulthood, they do feel anxiety in the same way. Solving these issues is not something to be taken lightly.

How Children Form Anxieties

It may help to understand why children form anxieties in the first place. Perhaps you can change certain aspects of their care that will make it less likely for them to develop anxieties in the future.

Children can become anxious and fearful in situations where they’re taught to feel that way. They’re also very intuitive and can pick up on the emotions of others. If you’re acting fearful and afraid in a certain situation, they may learn to have the same behavior without even realizing it.

Children can also learn anxiety from media sources such as television, movies, or video games. For example, TV shows and video games that are meant for older children or adults often contain scenes of suspense, horror or violence that can severely frighten a young child. As a result, they can develop many anxieties from it.

How To Overcome Anxieties

Once a child has anxieties, there are many avenues to consider for treatment. What works for one child may not work for another. Just keep searching for a solution that works for you and your family.

Here are some strategies you can use to help your child overcome their anxieties:

1.	Help your child relax. A child will feel anxiety when they’re stressed. Explore different options for helping your child relax, then allow them to enjoy these relaxing games or hobbies. The activity you choose may be different for every child, or different depending on the day.

2.	Find a distraction. When your child feels anxious all of a sudden, do something to distract them from the situation at hand. If you’re out in public and they start to panic, perhaps you can engage them in a conversation about something they like or distract them with a toy or something of interest in your surroundings. If you’re at home, try a fun game.

3.	Avoid pushing your children. You might find that you’re pushing your child to behave a certain way without ever realizing it. It’s more common than you think! Be positive around your child and free them from unnecessary pressure.

•	If you need to make a change, do it gradually so it isn’t shocking to the child.

4.	Schedule “worry time.” This activity works well for adult anxieties too. Schedule a time during the day that is designated “worry time,” where your child can worry and vent. Your job is to listen to your child and help them sort out their feelings.

•	This technique is also helpful because, when a child is worrying, you can tell them that they’re allowed to worry but they just need to wait for the designated time. They may not even feel worried anymore when the time comes.

5.	Build confidence. Help your child build their confidence. When you’re feeling confident, it’s difficult to feel anxious or scared. If your child begins to feel confident instead of anxious, they’ll begin to have a positive attitude about themselves. This will also help them when they’re faced with fearful situations again in the future.

When you help your child learn how to overcome anxieties while they’re young, you also teach them an important skill that will be of great benefit for the rest of their life. Not only will they have a happier childhood, but they’ll also be a stronger, more confident, and happier adult.

People are constantly working to make real improvements in the world. New waves of communication and better technology have lead to increased life spans and seemingly better lives.

While there are many positives when it comes to modern life, the downside is that sometimes people try to cram too many things into one day. In this fast paced world, stress may get the better of you and you might have trouble looking on the bright side.

Scheduling Downtime

You may feel like you should always be doing something productive. However, taking care of yourself is ultimately the most productive thing you can do. When you’ve given yourself proper rest and permission to do whatever you want once in awhile, you’ll be better able to focus great efforts on the other things in your life that matter.

People that schedule downtime for themselves clearly have lower stress levels. Allow yourself a proper amount of time for rest. Get 6-8 hours of sleep at night and avoid the temptation to stay up doing something else with that time.

You should also allow yourself a portion of the day where you get to do whatever you want. Even when time is short, let yourself enjoy a few minutes of total relaxation sometime during the day to rejuvenate.

Scheduling proper downtime also gives you time for reflection. When you reflect on your life, you can concentrate on the meaning of it all. You’ll be more likely to truly enjoy your journey. It’s so easy to let life pass you by if you don’t take some time to reflect.

Concentrating On Attitude

Thinking positively is something you can choose to do regardless of your circumstances in life. Everyone struggles with it from time to time, and you owe it to yourself to focus on having a positive attitude.

A positive attitude is the foundation for a good life. Your outlook will allow you to enjoy all the craziness and will equip you to deal with the stressful parts. When negative thinking creeps up, just think about the things that are going right. You can also visualize how it’ll feel when things turn around for the better.

Keeping Up

In a fast paced life, you can definitely take certain steps to slow your life down, but you can also work on being able to keep up!

Make a list of the areas where you’re having trouble balancing. Brainstorm actions that you can take to improve your ability to cope.

For example, if you struggle to complete your tasks at work, see what you can do to fix this challenge. Maybe you can do one of your projects more efficiently. Perhaps you can rearrange your schedule to take care of the more stressful tasks first, leaving the least stressful for the end of the day when you’re ready to unwind.

Dealing with Stress

Stress in your day-to-day life is nearly unavoidable. However, it’s how you deal with the stress that counts. It’s important for you to not let it build up, or it could lead to greater issues in the long run.

Do what you can to relieve your stress in a healthy way. Work on relaxation and breathing techniques. If you’re more socially inclined, venting to a close friend can help you deal with stress. As long as you’re doing something to relieve your stress, you’ll be able to jump back into your faced paced life with a positive attitude.

Just because the world we live in is hectic, it doesn’t mean that your life needs to be that way also. When you use these tips, you’ll find it a lot easier to remain positive and enjoy a stress-free life.

In your drive for excellence, you may take on so many projects that life often seems chaotic. In the midst of doing it all, do you remember to take time for yourself?

Spending time on YOU is critical! It enables you to feel rested, calm, stress-free, and fulfilled. When you’ve had proper rest, you can accomplish more and maintain the stamina to continue.

On the other hand, if you neglect to make time for yourself, you’re more likely to become depressed, stressed, or unhappy.

Perhaps you feel that there’s just not enough time for you. Somewhere in the mix, you lost any time you ever had for yourself. However, the good news is that, with some creativity and perseverance, you can recapture some of that critical you-time!

Consider using these strategies to reap some rejuvenating time for yourself:

1.	Pencil yourself in. Make time for yourself by adding it as a priority in your schedule. As you fill out your planner, include it along with your other important tasks and stick to the appointment!

2.	Give yourself 15 minutes when you get home. Insist on at least 15 minutes of recoup and rejuvenation time when you get home from work. If you have to lock yourself away from stressors or even family members, than that’s what you must do! This time allows you to properly transition from your work life to your home life.

•	Explain this new technique to your family so that they understand its importance. This way, no one feels like you’re just avoiding them!

•	A simple strategy is to soak in the bath for 15 minutes. The water will relax you, and you’ll feel refreshed after a long day.

3.	Take advantage of your lunch break. Your lunch break is there for you to do what you please. After you eat, make good use of your time by going for a walk, exercising, listening to inspiring music, or even get in a bit of shopping if that’s what relaxes you.

4.	Enjoy a break while the kids nap. Here’s a good tip for stay at home moms. Give yourself some much needed “you” time whenever your children sleep. You might be tempted to get as much work done as you can while they’re asleep, but you’ll find you actually get more done if you give yourself a chance to rest and rejuvenate yourself.

•	Explore new ways of accomplishing things like household tasks while your kids are up. For example, turn chores into learning games that you can all participate in.

5.	Go to sleep earlier. Going to sleep earlier at night will enable you to get up in time to enjoy some morning “me” time. Just think how pleasant it would be to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning without having to look at your watch.

6.	Take a vacation day. Take a vacation day to just relax and do whatever you like. You don’t have to take a trip to take a vacation! Time spent on your favorite hobbies will also rejuvenate you. When you return to work, your renewed energy may surprise you!

At first glance, these strategies may look difficult to implement into your busy routine. A good way to get started with them is to incorporate just one at a time. That way, you only have to adjust to one small change. As you become accustomed to that one strategy, you can add another, and then another, until one day you’ll find that making time for yourself is easy.

Once you learn to make time for you, you’ll have more energy and time to enjoy the good things life has to offer.

Panic is an emotion that everyone has felt at one time or another. Feeling panic is normal, but if panic is taking over your daily life, it’s time to take action to reduce it. Understanding what it is and what you can do about it can help immensely.

Panic serves a clear purpose in life. It gets your adrenaline pumping and allows you to act quickly to save yourself when you’re faced with danger. Humans are complex creatures, however, and your mind may create panic in situations where it wouldn’t help you.

Also, if these situations continue to arise, you may be dealing with a serious panic disorder, so please consult with your physician.

Here are some strategies that can help you overcome panic:

1.	Breathe deeply. Deep breathing techniques can bring you a certain level of calm during any situation. When you start to feel panicked, you tense up and your breathing becomes quick or heavy.

•	Take a moment to find your breath and take deep breaths in and out. The deep breathing will relax you and help you focus on taking in oxygen, instead of the stressful situation.

2.	Watch your health. Your mental and physical health are all part of the same system. When you take care of yourself, many of your problems tend to right themselves. If you have a poor diet, lack exercise, or don’t sleep well, take action to correct these core problems. Doing this will often address your panic directly or indirectly.

3.	Seek professional help. Discuss treatment options with your physician and naturopath. There are natural treatments available as well as several well-studied prescription medications that can help with your anxiety and panic concerns. Your doctor will know best if you’re a good candidate for these medications.

•	Remember that you must always take a holistic approach that addresses the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of your health.

4.	Address the problem. Try to locate the source of your panic. Are you only panicking in certain situations, or do you feel anxious at all times? If you can figure out the source of your panic, you can address the problem by facing your fear directly.

•	Exercises to reduce your fears enable you to become more comfortable in situations that could set off a panic attack.

5.	Deal with your stress. Panic is more likely to arise in a stressed mind. If you study certain relaxation methods, you can keep your stress level down and make it less likely for you to experience a panic attack.

•	There are many relaxation methods for you to choose from that can keep you healthy and happy. Practicing yoga, daily meditation, prayer, and listening to soothing music are just a few ideas.

•	One of the best stress relievers is to make time for yourself each and every day. This time gives you a chance to relax, rejuvenate, and continue your day with renewed positive energy.

6.	Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine can increase the frequency of panic attacks. To be on the safe side, avoid or limit their use. While this tip may not cure your symptoms, it can be an important factor for getting you back into a healthy mental state.

Getting Help

Panic and anxiety fears are quite common and there is no shame in getting help. Recognize the triggers and early signs of panic and start fighting it. When you do, you’ll feel free once again!

The teenage years are a transitional state between being a little kid and an independent adult. It is not an easy time as many adults can tell you. The stresses experienced are very real and can have devastating consequences when they are not addressed.

Each generation has their own unique circumstances. For the older crowd it was growing up during the World Wars. Then there were the 1960s with the Vietnam and “free love.” In the 80s and 90s there was AIDS, the Gulf War, and drugs. Now, we have a combination of so many things, it is hard to name them all.

Life is tough for a teen. They are trying to find themselves against the backdrop of society and pressure from their peers. It is no wonder that they experience a high level of stress. If you have a teen, keep an open mind with them.

What are some of the stressors that teens deal with? Knowing where their emotions get most stirred up can help teen and parents understand each other better. Today’s teens deal with issues like:

•	Pressures of maintaining good grades and getting into college
•	Living up to extremely high expectations from society and family members
•	Gang violence
•	Drugs and alcohol
•	Opposite sex relationships and sexual activity
•	The conflict in the Middle East
•	The economy
•	Violence in school
•	Abuses – sexual, physical, mental
•	And so much more

Some of the things on this list are familiar. They are stressors that have plagued teens in each generation. One in particular, the economy, is something that parents often dealt with apart from their kids but in the current generation the repercussions of a bad economy have spilled over into the lives of teens. When parents lose jobs and can’t put food on the table or a roof over their family’s head that directly affects our children.

When a child reaches their teens, they begin to change. Some parents would compare them to Linda Blair in The Exorcist, but we’ve all had our turn spitting green pea soup. With no idea how to deal with their feelings, they lash out any way that they can. It could manifest as shouting matches with parents, hanging out with the wrong crowd at school, or sinking into depression.

Each of these situations is a ticking time bomb, so parents have to work to head things off at the pass. There are no hard and fast rules for dealing with a stressed teenager. The main objective is to help them find ways to relieve that stress that won’t compromise their health or their future. Here are a few suggestions:

•	Keep the lines of communication open no matter what the subject
•	Resist the urge to overreact to negative situations
•	Begin an exercise program
•	Have family fun time—see a movie, go out for coffee, go shopping
•	Talk to a counselor
•	Be aware of physical and personality changes in your teen

These stressors don’t affect your teen overnight. By staying close to your teen, you’ll be better able to spot changes that can indicate signs of stress.
